Chios, Greece (2002)

The renovation of this very small portal building was a challenge in many ways. Originally it served as a storage shed for goods brought by sea to remote villages on the north of Chios . Abandoned in the 70's when road connections were established, it had suffered a roof collapse and erosion from the sea. The community of Egrigoros, the closest of villages decided to turn it into a communal building and guest house powered by alternative means including the use of photovoltaic panels.

The walls were retained using special techniques; a new roof was added and special doors and windows were designed in order to fit the existing openings. A patio was designed that serves as a wave-breaker too and the furniture was hand-made on site.
